Welcome to Transition Centre's New Transition Towns

Transition Towns is a program for developing local community resilience – the capacity to adapt to the challenges of our time.  These include environmental, economic, and social issues.  It is grassroot and not top down, self-reliant and not dependent on outside funding and expertise.

Resilience is defined as the capacity to thrive in the face of the growing range and severity of challenges that face this country and the world.

Transition Centre[1] will assist in establishing local Transition Town initiatives and provide the resources for their developing.

The Mission:

Support emerging Transition Towns through training, resources, and consultation.

The Vision:

Local communities with a citizen driven program developing the resilience needed to meet the challenges of this time.

The Objectives:

1.  Establish Transition forming groups.

2.  Provide introductory training for launching the community initiative.

3.  Support ongoing development.

Multi-Tier Approach

Transition Centre provides a multi-tiered approach to developing local community resilience programs.  We are prepared to customize our offerings.  Our initial consultation is free and subsequent expenses tailored to the needs and means of local communities and groups.

  1. Tier One consists of establishing a forming group, raising awareness, and building networks.
  2. Tier Two consists of establishing a broad base of support, identifying working groups, and holding community meetings.
  3. Tier Three involves creating a local organization:  Developing a clear vision and mission, working partnerships with allied interests, and building bridges with local governments.
  4. Tier Four consists of developing a comprehensive community resilience plan.  Transition Centre has developed a Resilient Communities Blueprint based on its experience achieving Tier Four which provides the framework for developing the comprehensive local plans.
  5. Tier Five involves creating the local organization to move your community to increasingly higher levels of resilience.

Disclaimer

Transition Centre does not claim it will fix your problems; indeed, it does not offer to do so.  Our objective is to encourage each locality to gain the capacity to solve their own problems.  We will work to facilitate a startup.  We will help channel knowledge and skills and best practices to achieve that capacity.  Coming from out of town, we bring a measure of objectivity.  We are non-partisan.

There are communities that will choose to pioneer local resilience.  Our objective is for these to achieve the capacity to serve as resource hubs within their own regions.  Success will breed success.  We seek to establish a network of these Rural Resilient Hubs across the country to build synergy and overcome a sense of isolation.
